PENGUIN
ISLAND DXPEDITION 1990
The
South African (RSA) Penguin
Islands (26 37'S, 15 9'E)
are located off the coast
of Namivia, with Namibia left
as an intervening country
between the islands and
the RSA, thus qualifying
the Penguins for separate
DXCC country status. RSA
operating licenses as well
as landing permission from
the Department of Environment
Affairs were on hand as
the multinational ZS9Z/ZS1
operation swung into action. The
Penguin Islands afe just
a cluster of barren rocks,
today uninhabited. The remaining
structures there confirm
that a lively guano mining
community existed long ago. The
rough landing sites are
located along the eastern
coast, with the island effectively
blocking signals to the
west. All the while,
many resident birds flew
overhead, swooping low,
trying to convince these
occasional visitors to leave. OPERATORS
