그리스 북부에 있는 산. 높이 2,033 m. 칼키디키 반도에서 에게해(海)로 돌출한 3개의 반도 중 동쪽 끝에 있는 아크티 반도 선단부에 위치하는 피라미드형의 산이다.

아토스라는 명칭은 아크티 반도(길이 45 km, 면적 321 km2) 자체를 가리키기도  한다. 아토스곶(串)은 항해상의 난관으로 많은 사고가 일어난 곳이다. 이러한 위험을 피하기 위해 BC 483년경에 크세르크세스는 반도의 기부에 대규모 운하를 판 후 함대가 지나가게 하였다.

동(東)로마 제국시대에는 니케포루스 2세의 원조로 성(聖)아타나시우스가 라우라 수도원을 건립하였다(963). 그 후로 많은 수도원이 건립되었기 때문에 아토스산을 성산(聖山:Ayion Oros)이라고도 불렀다.

수도원에는 많은 문학작품이 보존되어 있으며, 이곳에 간직되어 있는 수도원 문서는 동로마 제국 말기의 사회·경제 사정을 밝히는 데 귀중한 자료로 평가되고 있다. 세계유산목록에 등록되어 있다.

Reports are coming out that at least half of the 800 year old Helandari Monastery complex was destroyed by a fire last week on Thursday. None of the 25 resident monks were hurt, and reports indicate that a collection of centuries old icons, heirlooms and religious relics were saved. This is not the same location where our friend Monk Apollo, SV2ASP/A, lives and transmits from. The fire was at the Chelandri Monastery. Monk Apollo lives at the Docheiariou Monastery.
